Holy Trinity has a peal of eight bells, of which we are justifiably proud. Six bells were recorded as being in existence in 1630. In 1815 these were recast at the Whitechapel Bell Foundry, London, and two more were added at the same time. All were re-hung in 1903. They range in weight from the Treble at 5 cwt. to the Tenor at 15 cwt.
LISTEN to the Cuckfield Surprise Major
The Cuckfield Surprise Major is a quarter peal first performed in July 1962. A 30-second extract from the peal rung on Holy Trinity’s own bells is provided for you above as an MP3 download. You can also download the score here.
Bellringing at Cuckfield
We have nine Cuckfield ringers of varying ages at present, but sometimes we are also helped by ringers from other Sussex towers on practice nights. Our primary aim is to maintain the service ringing for the Church. We therefore ring for the 9:45am Sunday services and for special services throughout the year. We also ring for the Church weddings at Holy Trinity – usually about 20 a year. As a member of the Sussex County Association of Change Ringers, the Cuckfield tower is used by SCACR for training sessions and it is a popular venue for bands of visiting ringers.
Our practice nights are Thursday evenings. We welcome all visitors, whether they are experienced ringers and have come to ring, or other visitors who have just come to watch the ringing and to see the bells. We always enjoy introducing visitors to the bells and the skills of ringing. We always welcome new ringers of all ages, so do come to try bellringing.
For more information, you should drop in to a Thursday evening practice or contact the Bellringers Secretary, David Wilson.
